As I was walking to St Ives
I met man with seven wives
If every wife had seven sacks And every sack had seven cats
And every cat had seven kittens
How may were going to St Ives?

To work this out lets start at the end. Every cat had seven kittens and every sack had seven cats. It is therefore fairy straight forward to work out how many cats were in each sack, the answer being seven adult cats and forty nine kittens or a total of fifty six cats. Now each wife had seven sacks each with seven adult cats and forty nine kittens in. That means each wife had forty nine adult cats and three hundred and forty three kittens making a total of three hundred and ninety two cats per wife. Since the man had seven wives each with seven sacks containing a total of forty nine adult cats and three hundred and forty three kittens the mans wives carried in total three hundred and forty three adult cats and two thousand four hundred and one kittens or two thousand seven hundred and forty four cats in all. The question that springs to mind is where on earth did this man find seven wives each with the strength to carry forty nine adult cats and three hundred and forty three kittens. (Anyone who suggests St Neots will be dismissed from the class) I find it highly implausible and difficult to believe and would suggest you would be hard put to find one wife capable of such a fury feline feat as to carry this quantity of cats and kittens. With this in mind I would not be at all surprised if the man he met neither had that quantity of wives nor the cats and kittens and to go with them. In fact I feel tempted to believe the whole thing may have been made up and he never met any one going to St Ives at all.
