Return to Buddha gallery.
Early in the history of Buddism it was the practice for representations of Buddha to be confined to parts of the body, particularly Buddhas hands and feet. A little later this practice was largely superceeded by the personification of Buddha with paintings and carvings featuring Buddhas face and full body. This pair of carved wooden Buddha hands recollects the earliest tradition of Buddha carvings and paintings. The hands are held on metal pins set in a wooden base.
