ROOTS EMPORIUM HOMEPAGE
Tigers eye is a variety of quartz. It is formed when silica oxide (the principal component of quartz) replaces the mineral crocidolite. (Sometimes tigers eye is referred to as crocidolite.) The significance of this is that crocidolite has a fibrous crystal structure where as most quartz varieties do not. In tigers eye the Silica oxide replaces the crocidolite but keeps the fibrous crystal structure. It is this fibrous structure that gives tigers eye its silky lustre. The stripy patterns seen in tigers eye is caused by twists in the fibres. Small amounts of iron are responsible for the yellow colouring commonly seen in tigers eye. The scientific term for the process where by one mineral replaces another but keeps the formers crystalline structure, as in the formation of tigers eye, is pseudomorphism.
A common occurring gemstone, tigers eye is found in large quantities in South Africa with significant deposits also located in Australia, California, Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Namibia.
The gemstone known as tigers eye matrix has alternating layers of tigers eye and iron oxide.
As well as being used as gemstones for necklaces, bracelets and earrings, tigers eye is also used ornamentally for items such as umbrella handles.
Tigers eye is the birthstone for November along with citrine. Gemini is the sign of the zodiac associated with tigers eye.
The tigers eye jewellery, necklaces, bracelets and earrings stocked by Roots Emporium are hand made in Northern Thailand. As with the majority of our gem chip jewellery we import these tigers eye necklaces and bracelets directly our selves.
