A wooden mask hangs in the hall
Clinging closely to the wall
It’s hollow eyes observing all
Who to the house do come to call.
The wooden mask is seen to show
No changing face to those below
That through the hallway come and go
And yet this is not really so.
For does the wooden mask not sneer
On those that pass without a fear
Does that unchanging face appear
Now contemptuous to peer.
To frown ironic on the head On those who’s falling footsteps tread
A path to unsuspecting dread
While the wooden mask hangs overhead.
